Patio and Deck Lights
Deck lights are normally attached to the posts, and often also embedded into the floor of the deck. They can create a very special ambience and can fulfill an important safety function by highlighting the edges the deck itself and steps leading to it.
Low voltage LED lights are becoming a popular choice for deck lighting. They consume very little power and last for many years – you can reasonably expect a 100,000 hour lifespan, which means more than 11 years of constant use. They are also available in a range of different colors, allowing you to create some interesting effects. This type of lighting is best suited to marking out the edges of the decking, since each light is normally only equal to about a 15-20 watt incandescent light.
Wall Lights
Broadly speaking, outside wall lights can be divided into traditional lantern types, and modern designs. There are many different styles available, so you’re sure to be able to find lights that will compliment your house.
Flood Lights
Floods are designed to produce a high degree of illumination over a specific area, normally using halogen bulbs. They are very useful in security applications and are often coupled to motion sensors, so they turn on automatically when movement is detected within the range of the sensor. On some models, this range is adjustable.
Garden & Backyard Lighting
Low voltage pedestal lighting is useful for lighting garden pathways and drives. There are also many so called ‘accent’ lights on the market – low voltage spotlights designed to pick out certain features of your house or garden. Strategically placed, they are a great means of creating a unique ambience. You can even buy lights embedded in artificial rocks.
Solar Lights
Solar powered lights are becoming increasingly popular for garden and backyard usage. They are of course an economical choice, and are also very environmentally friendly. These lights will store the sun’s energy during daylight hours and switch on automatically when it starts to get dark. Obviously, they should be positioned in a sunny area so they can charge their batteries properly.
